FAQs
General Questions
What is Otmo?
Otmo is a user-friendly software platform for movement creation using motion capture technology. It allows users to position, modify, sequence, and share digital recordings of human movement in a 3D environment.
What is motion capture?
Motion capture is the process of recording the movement of people in 3D. This often involves placing reflective markers or sensors on a performer and using multiple cameras or sensors to capture their movements from different angles. The data is then processed to create a 3D representation of the motion.
Motion capture is becoming increasingly accessible with the introduction of AI-based tools such as Move.ai which can transform video into 3D motion.
We think this technology is transformational for people working in motion-based creativity, allowing for the documentation, observation and manipulation of human movement.
Who is Otmo for?
Otmo is for people looking for a simple and accessible tool with which to sequence and arrange human movement. It provides a digital solution for people working in dance and other movement practices, enabling creativity to continue outside of the rehearsal studio; and it provides a solution for people working in digital creation by embedding dance expertise into a powerful but user-friendly app.
Otmo is for beginners and professionals alike, allowing for the playful exploration of movement composition as well as the fine-grained sequencing and arrangement of complex choreographic structures.
What makes Otmo unique?
Otmo features a non-technical, user-friendly interface that vastly simplifies motion capture composition, making it accessible even without specialised training. Our powerful timeline feature makes it easy to edit, sequence and arrange motion capture recordings and audio tracks.
Otmo’s formation builder embeds choreographic principles by applying spatial and temporal offsets to motion sequences; users can generate complex patterns of movement with ease.
Does Otmo plan on extending the animation library?
Yes, definitely. We aim to substantially increase it to cover a broad range of dance styles and movement types. And we are keen to hear what type of movement you are interested in having in the library. Please add this in the feedback form from the app.
Does Otmo offer motion capture services?
Yes, we can offer a full motion capture recording solution to users who want to utilise their own content within the application. This is a bespoke service and motion capture sessions would take place from our studio in Hackney Wick, London. For more details on pricing please contact: [email protected]
Technical Questions
What are the system requirements for Otmo?
Otmo works on both Windows and MacOS operating systems. For optimal performance, we recommend using a computer with high processing power and graphics capabilities, such as an Apple Silicon M1 processor or above for Mac and an Intel i7 with an RTX 3070 or similar graphics card for PC. Otmo will work on lower spec machines but you may notice performance issues, especially when adding large quantities of characters to a scene.
Otmo will not work on a PC without a graphics card or on non-windows PCs such as Chromebooks.
What file formats does Otmo support?
Currently, Otmo supports the importing of characters in the .fbx file format. Details of this are shown on the import window in the app. We do not yet support characters in .glb format, which platforms such as Ready Player Me and Avaturn use, however, you can find many 3D characters to download in .fbx formats through platforms such as Mixamo.
Otmo exports video captures in .mov format
We plan to introduce further functionality to support the importing of motion capture and environments as .fbx files as well as music tracks in .mp3 format soon.
How do I import characters into Otmo?
Characters can be imported into Omto by clicking on the Import button in the top left of the Add character window.
To import a character into Otmo it must be in an .fbx format and have a humanoid/biped skeleton (it will not accept animal characters/skeletons for example). Your character must also follow the Unity or Mixamo bone naming convention.
The simplest route to finding characters that are compatible with Otmo is to use Mixamo’s online library. Characters downloaded from here will import directly into Otmo and work with the full library of motion sequences. It is important you download the character only, not the character and animation.
At the moment, Otmo cannot import characters created with popular character creation tools such as Ready Player Me or Avaturn, as they only export .glb files. There are ways in which you can convert these into .fbx format but it requires the use of additional software such as Blender and Mixamo as suggested in this guide.
For the more advanced users who want to create their own characters using a tool such as Blender, Maya, or Reallusion’s Character Creator, you must ensure your characters are rigged with a naming convention similar to that used by Unity and Mixamo. The easiest way to ensure compatibility is to import your character into Mixamo, which will automatically apply a skeleton that’s compatible with Otmo. A guide to the appropriate bone names can be found here.
Can Otmo be used in real-time with motion capture hardware?
Otmo does not currently support the live input of motion capture data, however, this is something we’re exploring for future updates.

Known bugs and workarounds
Do you have a working list of ‘known bugs’ that is up-to-date where I can see what is being worked on?
Yes you can visit our known bugs page on Notion for an up-to-date glance at what our developers are working on. It is important to note, however, that we are a small team and will be working to fix issues that affect the widest number of users first. Below we have listed some workarounds to help keep you working in the meantime!
The ‘start capture’ button doesn’t work in the preview window on the PC version. Is there a way to fix that?
Yes, you have to run the app as an administrator for the system to have access to the video capture function. Simply right click on the app when launching to reveal a menu with an option to ‘Run as Administrator’. Click on this. You may be presented with the pop up window asking ‘Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?’. Click Yes to open the app and you should now be able to start a video capture.
My characters sometimes sink into the ground when pausing a motion sequence or adding characters to a formation. Is there a way to fix that?
Yes, you can fix this by pressing stop and then play within your scene. This should reset your characters to stand on the neutral plane.
The characters sometimes lift off the ground when applying Time Scatter to formations in loop mode. Is there a way to fix that?
There is currently no solution in loop mode, however, this problem doesn’t happen in the timeline mode, so you can switch from loop mode and re-apply the time scatter to the relevant animation slugs to see the effect without this bug.
The reverse function doesn’t work in my motion settings tab. Is there a way to fix that?
Yes, you can fix this by trimming the very beginning of the movement phrase using the ‘trim’ function in the top of the motion settings tab.
